On July 4, 2025, two neighboring families fled rising floodwaters together, climbing into a small treehouse and waiting for hours with their children, parents, and dogs as the devastation unfolded around them.
Today, the Martinez family and the Kitchens family are finally back home side by side.
Their story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and extraordinary generosity. Even while recovering from damage to their own home, the Martinez family opened their doors to first responders, volunteer crews, and flood survivors in need of shelter.
With support from the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, Habitat for Humanity Kerr County, dedicated case managers, volunteers, and countless community partners, both families were able to rebuild and return home.
Recovery is about more than repairing houses. It is about families carrying one another through hardship and neighbors showing up when it matters most.
