Habitat was my ‘aha’ moment

Meet Carl, a dedicated regular volunteer at Habitat for Humanity Kerr County:

Hello, I am Carl Dufner of San Antonio, and I have served as a construction
volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Kerr County since March 2016. Prior to
Habitat, I had been retired from my career as a research scientist and partnered
with my wife Hope in a direct sales jewelry business. Being very handy in my
household, I looked at other business opportunities including home inspection,
handyman services and home accessory installation, but they all require lots of
time and expense. I still wanted to use my hands in serving God, and Habitat for
Humanity came into the picture as an “aha” moment.

In my younger years, I was always fascinated by houses under construction and loved the smell of fresh
wood. I would pick up scraps of wood at the construction sites and make
something. So, working for Habitat became a perfect match for my skills and gave
me opportunities to learn new ones. Why did I pick Kerrville? I get much enjoyment from driving through the countryside than trying to fight city traffic, and I have enjoyed working with the past and current construction volunteers. I am grateful for their expertise for they have taught me many new skills over all these years.

When I started in 2016, we were working on the last few houses on
Rankin Nix, and now I had a part in the construction of every house in the recently
completed Maud Jennings subdivision. As we embark on the new Mariposa
subdivision, I look forward to the challenge of building more new houses of
different styles and floor plans.

I would like to close with the verse from Hebrews 3:4, which says, “For every
house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.” All glory to God,
for we are His hands and feet building homes for families in need of safe places to live.
